Jennifer spent a weekend in

Mexico

at the orphanage where Heidi did her dental cleaning job. When I found out that Jennifer was in the same town where we had been, I emailed her directions, as best as I could recall. And she and her friend (who could speak Spanish) walked (!) and found the house we built. Here are a couple of pictures she took. The house looks lived in and the outhouse is being used...

Despite the travel and the heat and the wind and the dust and the roads, this trip is the must profound experience I've ever had, behind meeting my wife and watching the birth of my son and, of course, my baptism. I would recommend the mission experience to every American, to remind yourself of how privledged we are and our responsibility to give back for the benefit of those who have so little. I'm looking forward to our next opportunity to serve...

We'll, we left at 4 a.m. today from Vincente Guerro and now we are home safe in Edmonds, Washington. Everybody was well from any sickness as we left it felt so great to be back in the U.S.A. However, as those that have been on mission trips before will tell you, one bonds to the place in which you serve and you leave part of your heart there while also taking home the memories and experiences God teaches during the project.

As our team left we thought about how many more features we would like to have been able to equip the house with. We thought of how much Natividad still does not have and the possibilities of returning to bless her and others again with things we can provide. Yet, we were all anxious to get good showers, rest in our own beds, and be with our loved ones again.

A few years ago someone who had just returned from an African mission trip said, "there are definitely things to help in places like that, but there are so many things we would never want to change about other cultures." I always leave with a profound respect for these beautiful people who make the most of everyday in conditions we can only visit for brief moments. I wish for them the joy of freedom, the pleasantry of comfort, the availability of justice and health care, but the protection for their perseverance and happiness.

The thing is, we all live on a pretty small planet, the economic power and the compassion of people is enough to truly relieve the suffering of poverty if not poverty itself. I hope that the last half of my life I see humanity reach out more and more often to share and supply each other as we spin around this sun of ours. And, I am so blessed to have been with this wonderful group this past week. My life will always be richer for having done so.

Thanks in immeasurable quantities to those who met the need of those traveling with prayers, finances, and supplies. A special mention for the Vancouver, Washington First Church of God and the Impact Fellowship class of that church family, my wonderful friends who gave to our mission after already giving to one that went out from their own congregation. You are wonderful!

Home safe, but not finished! (Eric)

Well it was a looooong day today but everyone (for the most part is home). I was not able to blog last night as planned since we were packed with activities for the remainder of the day. Some short notes. We ended the day with a dedication of the house to Natividad and her children. It was a truly heartwarming moment. After that it was a quick shower, then on to Gastone's for a great meal. Then back to the mission for a debrief, pack up and lights out. We woke up at 3am this morning and left the mission at 4am. Timing was great and we arrived at the airport at just the right time. We were up in the air, off and back home at 4pm. Gary, Mark and David, met Dorris and Jen in San Diego. They are staying over until Monday and will be back in town then.

I and others will finish up the blog with postings and pictures over the next couple of days. There are a lot of good pictures of the finished house, migrant camp, restaurants, dentist offices and other cool shots that people took while we were out.

Progress on the house (Eric)

This was progress on the house from yesterday. Trying to get caught up on picture downloads / edits and blogging.

Once the house was up, it needed a good stucco on the outside. The stucco was a little looser version of the mortar. Everyone pitched in and helped stucco the outside walls.

Bob Peeks up through his work on as the rafters go up. Time to put on the roof.

You can see off to the left the roofing material that they are laying down now. Stucco is still going on. Great progress for the day!

Well I ended up with a solid case of the 'revenge' over the last day and a half. I spent the first half sitting and the second half bent over the camode. No fun. Thanks to Patsy and Wyle for letting me lay on their bed this afternoon while I recovered. I will get the blog caught up with pictures etc before and after dinner.

Soccer was so much fun . we played some kids at the migrant camp. They where so good that a 4 year old got past avid and scored a goal. it 6-0 until we scored are first goal. But then they scored 3 more goals but then we got a kid from the migrant camp on are team and he scored a goal to make the score 9-2. then we scored one more. But they scored four to make the final score 13-3. even though they whooped are butts it was still really really fun

It's a beautiful morning - only two more days left - how fast the time is flying by. We finished with the blocks on the house yesterday. We jumped in the waves for an hour, trying to wash off the dust and dirt while having lots of fun. Pizza for dinner, packing up food for the migrant camps, and then some still played Ligretto until lights out at 10 p.m. Nick and Mark had to use the bathroom - it came out both ends - but they seem better this morning. It's time for devotions. We're looking forward to what God has in store for us today!

Gerhard let me see your e-mail. Sorry about Dale Clark and Ramona. I'm glad you are having a good week at school. We miss you a lot and right now, Nick is heaving sick. So pray for us. It has not been that hot, but real dry and windy it all adds up to stressful outdoor exposure.

I wrote an e-mail to your on our Comcast account so maybe you could check out our regular e-mail. I can check our Comcast easily on Eric's Computer so It would be good for us to be in touch that way, not just on the blog.

All you have to do is send it to our self. Just put our own e-mail address in the address line just like I did. You can reply to mine if you want but that is all it will do, just send it to our self. Then we can be in touch and other's don't have to read it first, not that it matters except it has to go through several extra steps for me to actually get the message.

Bob's third day (Bob McGuire)

I just have to praise this team. Everyone is working so hard and the project is really coming together. We had a couple of sick folks on the team yesterday and now a couple of new ones, including my son Nick, are sick. It could be the heat, it could be some of the food, it could be a lot of things so it's hard to tell what really causes these bouts of crud. We had just arrived back at our compound and Nick took off to the bathroom, but was outrun by another of the younger kids. That one got the toilet, and nick found the trash can outside the bathroom. Both were heaving and well... you know. I and a couple others were standing there trying to help and both the boys when they were done starting joking around about it. They had a clear picture of how silly it looked with the both of them racing to the bathroom and doing the same things. No doubt though, they are sick and we hope it will pass quickly. But what I think is so great is how helpful everyone is to each other, and the great attitude even the youngest of our team are displaying.

Tomorrow we really have to hustle since we want to finish the windows and stucco on the house and start on the roof. But in the afternoon, we plan to go out to a camp of some migrant farm workers who are known to be among the poorest of the poor. We will be delivering food staples to them, enough to last about a week for a small family. So keep us in your prayers for the hard work we have yet to do, for recovery of our sick and the protection of the others who have not been sick, and that the small gifts we provide to the migrant farm workers would help them rejoice to have lived in this world with the rest of us.

Each of the windows and doors needed a form built over the header so that we could pour cement (it also has a couple pieces of rebar in them). This creates a solid beam over the door.

Only in Mexico can you get so dusty you blend into the miles of dirt and sand stretching all around you. With the winds coming strongly off the ocean not far away, the dust just seems to get everywhere. After mixing cement all day I felt dirty but was completely oblivious to the fact that there was such a thick layer of dirt on my skin that I looked completely matte. Only after after Eric began following me around with a camera, full of laughter at the appearance of me, did I realize why the little boy ( of whom we were building the house for) had been staring at me as though I were some new species of human being. So far Ana has been my main competitor for the dirtiest ECOG member at the end of the work day...but so far I seem to have claimed the award as poster child for a good hard days work in the land of Mexico.

Well, Jeri keeps telling us to say "Kyli this ones for you," so Kyli this one is for you. We found this cat in the back of a truck at work site. It drank water out of Maechens hand even though she claims to hate the cat. T.J. named it Diego and says its a boy. Halee stuck it under her shirt to keep it out of the wind and keep it quiet. The boys kept trying to throw it in the toilet hole (which is about 6 feet now.)

We were met in the morning at the site by some Oaxacan pronounced 'woahokin'. The Oaxacan are the native indigenous people of the area. Three vendors came by with tables full of crafts. There was jewelry, rugs, backpacks, etc available. We purchased a variety of goods. From what we heard there will be another opportunity to purchase crafts and such on Friday at the market.

From the beginning to now, I really can't believe how much we have accomplished in building this house for Natividad and her children. She comes every day to the work site and helps digging the "hole" for the outhouse, washing up all the tools at the end of the day, and just pitching in wherever she sees to be useful. But the best part for me is to see her smile as it gets wider and wider each day--just like she really can't believe it is happening either! That is the best blessing to me--to make a difference in the life of someone else.
Anyway love to Allen and Shauna and Matt and Sara! I miss you all.

Just a note that Kelly saw an opportunity to make a front step with some of the remaining materials. Mike and her laid it out and poured the cement! Here is the form. Natavidad looks on. She has really been in good spirits. (Eric)

Just finished lunch (Eric)

Well we had a good solid morning of work. Heidi was off with Patsy to the dentist office again, bright and sun-shiny as she always is. TJ was back in action and off to the build site. We made great progress today. I will post some pictures this evening.

Basically we started roughing in the windows with wooden frames and to continue building up beyond. We also got the door frame in. In this case, the 'we' is Steve and Tony. The rest of us worked on sifting sand, making mortar, filling in the cracks, laying blocks, delivering mortar and digging in 'The Hole'.

We made progress to the last stages of the wall building. The top circle of blocks are special. They look like normal blocks from the side but are an inverted v shape on the inside lengthwise. As these are placed on the top row, cement will be poured into them to create a 'ring' at the top. I called it a 'ring' beam, which was what they called it in Africa with similar construction. There was a special name for it here which I don't remember. This layer of blocks will offer better structural integrity to the house itself. There is rebar going vertically every 3 blocks from the foundation all the way to this ring beam. There will also be rebar going around the ring beam to offer better strength. Once the cement has been poured into the ring beam, 1 more row of blocks will be put down on 1 side of the house so that there will be a slant to the roof once it is on. The goal this evening is to get the ring beam done and that last row of blocks in place. Then we can do the roof tomorrow.

We also had some ladies set up their crafts at the work site for us to look at. A few of the folks purchased blankets, backpacks and jewelry.

That's about it until dinner time.

Renee went back with Heidi to the dentist office and Patsy went to the work site with the first crew. If we get done early enough there might be time for another swim in the ocean before dinner.

Here are a couple of pictures from the end of the day. You can see in this first one that we had to build make-do scaffolding out of 60 gallon drums and boards to get elevated for the higher blocks.Kelly is on mortar duty making sure all the block layers on each wall have mortar on their pads. Tony and Bob work on the front wall. Tony and Steve did a lot of corner work, which is what drove the straight lines for the inner wall work.

This is the house about 30 minutes before we left for the day. Mixing the last batch of mortar. Patsy is working on the left wall to the door.

Here is another shot. You can see Mike elevated above the edge on the scaffolding. Patsy is working on 'her' side.

That corner to Patsy's left is as high as the wall will get. Tony and Steve build up the corners to the height of 11 blocks and the rest of us working on a specific wall, build up to that level. We use string and levels to keep the blocks properly aligned.

Good morning from Mexico (Eric)

Good morning all - we woke up around 6:30am this morning. I am sitting outside and the clouds are already starting to burn off. I was greeted first thing this morning by a smiling Heidi. It looks like the prayers are answered and she is up and about. Heidi plans on heading back to the dentist office today. TJ is also up and about and is ready to head back to the work site.

We have been thinking about a rooster BBQ, since that rooster starts to crow around 4am. Hmmmm.

Yesterday we had a nice sit down dinner at Baja Fiesta restaurant. I heard the burgers were really good. So were the fajitas and carne azada. We stopped for ice cream on the way home.

You could really tell everyone was tired since the youth went directly to bed when we got back. There was no card playing or horse play.

Today we plan on getting some solid progress done on the house.

Need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to facilitate transporting children and supplies during inclement weather on dirt roads. Ideal vehicle would be a mid-90s or newer Jeep.

Need a 15-passenger van for daily transport of daycare children.

Cafeteria floor is adobe tile which has broken and missing tiles, presenting a hazard for staff, children and visitors and a challenge to clean. We want to replace the tile floor with a tinted concrete surface. Estimated cost $800.

Fumigation of buildings – est. $300, or looking for someone who can do this work.

Craft time with the kids (Jeri)

We had the opportunity to do a craft with the children of W.H.O. today. Participants were Michael, Wylie, Mark and myself. We also had the assistance of the two school teachers, who were absolutely wonderful. It was chaotic as the kids were between the ages of 2 and 4, with the exception of Sergio (pictured with me), who is 18 months. They were running all around and I think we caused the teachers to lose control of their class! (Jeri)

Wylie is pictured with Enoc below who wanted to play instead of do crafts. Wylie rose to the challenge.

Mark and Michael helped this young student complete his craft, which was based on Psalm 23, and printed on the inside of their craft project in Spanish and English.

Both John and Nick are working dilligently. I'm so proud of them, no complaining at all so far.

I just preached on the "Plumb Line" from Joel a few weeks ago. Now we are using them and trying to keep things square and level.

I hope Melody is looking at this blog and these pictures of her 3 Muskateers. Miss you alot Melody, you'd love the day care program here, the kids are so cute that even us men are noticing their cuteness. We all eat together at breakfast and lunch, with the little kids, they are so cool!

Filling in the cracks (Ana)

Today we started laying bricks. My favorite part was right after the bricks were set and level, when we filled in the cracks. I really enjoyed putting mortar in all the little spots between the bricks! I don't know why it was so much fun, maybe something to do with the fact that the alternative was hole digging. Regardless "mortaring" is my newly found passion.

Last night we ate at a place called the crazy chicken. They had the best food that I have ever eaten in my entire life. I ordered a beef and cheese taco and was blessed with this fabulous combination of beef, cheese, tortilla, a lil lime, some tomato's, and the best guacamole you could ever have tasted. Bottom line is that the food is great here and everyone will just have to come build a house to find that out.

I think the trip has made me appreciate things more. Here is the list. I love my bed, and my bathroom, haha and being able to flush toilet paper... I think you get the idea. However, despite the things we miss, this facility is more then I could ask for. We have our own little dorm rooms. They are really nice. I have not been on a mission trip before but we are very comfortable and I'm thankful for how nice everyone is and how wonderful our food has been.

I miss everyone back home and hope you all are having fun reading this blog.

The trip in perspective (Michael Allred)

Well I think the trip has been really fun so far. One of the days we went to the beach and it was so much fun. We went out 50 ft and were waist deep, we would body surf the enormous waves. The waves that were too big we were diving through. Today at the building site we were throwing the Frisbees down the 300 foot cliff that slopes at a steep angle. We would chase down after them. It was really fun playing with Navtividad's two children. We would play soccer and Frisbee. Marco and Carlos come to the building site each day after school. They are really good at retrieving the Frisbees. Marco is 8 and Carlos is 4. Carlos will beat me, Nick, Mark and Wylie at chasing the Frisbees. He gets them more than anyone else. I miss Mom! I can't wait to come back home.

We came back for lunch after the morning at the house. I will try to post a couple of quick pictures while the others are having lunch before we head back to the house to lay more blocks. Some of the kids went back a couple of hours earlier to do a craft project with the young kids at the daycare.

Right at the beginning the truck got stuck, Steve is so efficient, he had the trailer unloaded, off the truck and the truck out of the ditch I nearly missed the picture.

This was how the house looked at the beginning of the morning. Kelly is directing the mixing of the mortar and we had a new load of mix delivered. The mortar mix needs to be run through a screen before it can be used. Then a wheel barrow is filled up + 1/2 bag of cement and then water and human mixing power. It's quite a bit of work.

A quick pose before we start laying blocks. The idea is to work with higher corners and the use those to make level lines across for the walls. You can see Renee getting ready to sift mix for the sand that needs to be used for the mortar mix.

You can see Gary mixing mortar while the rest are laying blocks, mortar and filling in the spaces between the blocks. Another row goes up.

Everyone had a job today. Laying blocks, filling in the cracks, leveling blocks, moving mortar to those who need it. It was a busy morning of non-stop work.

We are making good progress. Patsy surveys the wall she was working on. We are putting on some last minute blocks before lunch.

Ok, time to clean up the tools for lunch. Time to survey the work we finished and then get some much deserved food to energize us for the rest of the day. We are up to 4-5 rows of blocks and are establishing where the door and windows will go.

Everything has gone smoothly so far - a little sunburns around the edges where sunblock was not spread. But other than that ....

Breakfast is over, Steve and the first van have headed out leaving a few of us behind to finish up the kitchen duty (Gary, Anna, Meachen, and Halee). Jeri is staying with Heidi and TJ. We can pray that they will be fully recovered by afternoon. This will be the last entry until we return for lunch, where we can try t osqueeze in some progress pictures. The rest of the day will be a work day at the house, where we hope to make good progress on the walls and of course, dig in 'The Hole'. I am getting the wave from Kelly telling me it is time to log off.

The morning begins (Eric)

Well we started again early this morning. Everyone was up by 7am if not earlier. We had a short devotional this morning, sharing the plans for the day and some prayer time.

Our devotional reading this morning was from Psalm 23;
"The Lord is my Shepard, I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quite waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

It really makes you think about how the Lord watches over us and the rewards for following him, both now and in the future.

After our devotional the smaller kids for the daycare came in for breakfast. We joined them a few minutes after they were served. This morning it was scrambled eggs, refried beans and tortillas.

Well I may have spoken a little too soon in my last post of the evening yesterday. Our TJ and Heidi both woke up with a little stomach unhappiness and could use prayers today. It isn't serious, just unhappy stomach. Pastor Bob could also use a prayer for a little achiness in his back.

Being in a unique environment as we are on this trip, causes me to to be extraordinarily intent on listening to what I'm saying inside my head, what I'm thinking with my heart and I think most importantly, what God is trying to teach me or say to me while we are here. Yesterday, we toured a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center which is described as "beans and rice and Jesus Christ" to sumarize the program. They claim a 60 percent recovery rate which is huge compared to rehab programs in the US. God seemed to be saying to me, "I'm clearly at work here, you don't have to 'bring me' to these people, you just have to 'join' me here." A sentence in a book I'm reading right now reminded me that Christianity is not a "do" religion but rather a "done" religion. We don't have to earn God's love and his grace that saves us, granting heaven's access. We simply recieve what Jesus has done for us by bridging the gap so we have that access by faith, by acceptance, by belief. I recognized once again how much I need to live out of the things God has done rather than what I can do. My little tasks have more meaning when they are encapsulated within God's work. They are just little futile tasks if they have no meaning but what my own efforts accomplish. We don't save the world, Jesus has done that, we just do what is before us to do. We'll do more of that today with brick and mortar, holes to dig, and wheelbarrows to move.

The facilities at W.H.O. (Eric)

The facilities here are really nice. Someone had asked for a couple of pictures to be posted. Here is one showing our rooms from the parking lot. The Stairs on the right go up to the four rooms where we are all staying. (Well most of us anyway - Wiley and Patsy got the cushy accommodations) . Anyway.... the rooms sleep 6-8 each in bunk beds. They have windows on either end and a fan on the ceiling, so they really are comfortable. It's away from the big city, so you have the normal outdoor noises, lots of crickets etc as we go to sleep at night.

We already have a routine going when we end the evening. We have a devotional and a short sharing period about how the day went. Then the kids and some of the adults have been playing 'blitz' a card game the youth enjoy, while the rest of us ... 'rest', journal, read, and blog.

Everyone is in good health and in good spirits. The work is strenuous, but not too hard for our group. Everyone is working well together, which is also a real blessing.

Keep the prayers for health and opportunities to witness coming.

As W.H.O. worker, Able, and I picked up children, I was amazed at the spunkiness of the kids. The teeny tiny children climbed into the van and made themselves comfortable. Not a one of them was crying or unhappy. The van didn't even seem all that crowded though it was loaded with 18 kids, 2 teachers and Able and I!

Today Pobo went to live with a new boy - David is the youngest son of Natividad, the woman for whom we're building the home. Logan's only qualification for Pobo's new home was that Pobo go to live with a "good boy", and you can tell by looking at this picture that David is a good boy.

Today we poured the floor pad and set the corners for the house. It feels good to see real progress before us!

A day with the Dentistas (Heidi Nettles)

Hi everyone! Here is the clinic building that is operated by the mission. It is complete with a small dental wing (3 chairs) and medical clinic with a functional operating room for emergencies.

The patients today all lined up outside when they heard there were dental staff available and I saw six or seven today. Most had only been cleaned once before and some never, and one nice lady had never been to a dental office before. This lady came in and embraced me with a huge hug before I even started to work on her!

Most of today's patients would've been seen in my home office for multiple visits to complete their cleanings, but it is not possible here, so we powered through and did as much as we could.

Thanks to Patsy Jacoy I was able to work while she ably assisted me and appropriated translation when necessary.

Getting the floor started

We started off with a lesson regarding how to mix cement from Steve. Jake, Matthew, Halee, David, Gerhard, Eric, Steve and Bob. I am trying frantically to keep up with David since we both need to shovel 20 scoops each into the mixer.

Halee and Meachen fill in the holes around the border, David puts down more slurry under the supervision of Tony. Tony is the foreman for this portion of the project.

We are continuing to work on digging out that 15' hole for the outhouse. The ground is extremely hard once you get down about 1-2 feet. We started the day with the quote; "Eric, there is a 'huge' rock across the bottom of our hole!". By the time I wandered over to see what John was seeing, it had changed to; "Never mind, it's just clay that is hard as rock". Most of the youth and some of the adults have spent time in the infamous Hole digging their way down deeper.

Beginning the day

The day started quickly this morning. So quickly there wasn't really time to get more than a quick note in from Bob. It's 4pm and we haven't slowed down for 5 minutes. The rest of the group has headed over to a Drug Rehab lock down for a tour and I decided to stay behind to get some pictures and notes up on the site.

The day started around 6:30am for most of us. We had breakfast around 7:30am along with the kids that are here as part of the daycare. I will try to post a couple of pictures later, or have someone else do that. But they are wonderful and cute as can be. After breakfast, Heidi and Patsy separated from the group to go work at the Dentist. I am sure they will have some great stories to share.

The rest of us headed back to the job site to get started for the day. The goal was to get the floor poured, another post or two made, and the outhouse hole dug out more.

Well we made good progress on all counts. By lunchtime the floor was poured and we had more depth to the outhouse hole. We came back for a great lunch of home-made chicken soup. We ate again with the kids in the daycare.

After lunch we separated again. Half of the group went to sort clothes which will be handed out later at the migrant camps. The rest of us went back to the job site to dig and start laying bricks for the wall. We met the new foreman for the brick laying, Tony.

We came back to the casa about 3:00pm to shower before going to tour a Drug Rehab.

Jackie just came by and wanted to get some computer help - I will start posting some pictures as soon as I finish with that. (Eric)

Bob's First Day (Bob McGuire)

Greetings to all! Each time I take a mission trip I'm helped. I find that the first impact of being in a less developed country is not the gratitude I feel for my more comfortable life, but a jealousy for things more simple. The simple basics of life; helping other people, loving your family, staying close to God, keeping a smile, being grateful for each day; I see these things in the lives of people who have almost no material comfort. Maybe material comfort isn't where the best things are found?

Matthew was doing some work early on moving earth from nearby to the inside of the floor area to help raise the level a little bit.

Anna and David get to work on leveling out one side of the house floor. You can see in the background the youth digging a post hole. The question is ... How many youth does it take to dig a post hole?

Gary and others mix the slurry for one of the posts which will be used to fence off Natividad's property.

Bob Puts in some of the last of the slurry for the border fence post. It's a long reach. Good thing he is so tall!

Ok, it is 10:30 and pretty much everyone else is in bed now. So it is time to turn in as well. We will be up at 7:00 tomorrow. Heidi and Patsy are off to the dentist clinic to do some work there. The rest of us are going to the job site to hand mix and pour the cement floor for the house. More stuff to come. (Eric)

Marco and Michael were playing some soccer and had a good time kicking the ball around. Marco will be living in the house with his Mother and siblings.

It was a great full first day today. We enjoyed seeing and playing with the kids that will live in the house we are building. The work is hot and very dusty, so we get very dirty, but we all know it will be rewarding in the end. We only worked a few hours. We came back to a wonderful lunch, which included fresh avocado and watermelon. Yum! Then, we went to the beach and played. I wanted to post a beach pic since the youth had so much fun playing together in the water.

I miss you Frank. Eric said you e-mailed him. I keep thinking so much about how you should be here. You would do a better job building a house then I, but I am trying! Just keep working on that bathroom - your mission project for us! The kids say Hi. The conditions in the compound here are very nice. Can you send Kel this blog address? Her e-mail is on my computer.

Hi mom and dad! I am excited that you guys are going to look at the blog every night. I know you would love this work, dad! We saw a guy in a wheelchair get baptized in church tonight. That was a WOW experience. They backed the wheelchair into the baptistery. It took 4 people to get him in. They dunked the whole chair under with him and he kind of slid out. It took all those people to get him out. It was amazing. I love you guys dearly. Jeri

Digging the outhouse

We need to dig a 15' hole in the ground to prepare for the outhouse. I have no idea how that will happen, but with the Lord with us, we should get a deep hole dug. You can see Halee and Maechen digging the first couple of feet out. It's hard digging in the dirt because of the clay and how hard it is packed in.

We decided to use Kelly as our official measuring stick. I have no idea what we are going to do when it gets over her head.

Getting started on the house

Some of the posts may get a bit back-and-forth since we seem to be going from place to place pretty quickly. This morning after breakfast we went to the house site that we will be working on. The house itself will be 12x20 it looks like. The foundation ring has already been laid out. We spent the morning getting the prep work done so that tomorrow we can pour a cement floor over it. It all had to be level to 3.5" below the cement block line. (Eric)

Hello from Patsy and Wylie

It's Sunday and we've just returned from getting the house bed ready for pouring of the foundation tomorrow. Weather is just right -- warm with a nice breeze off the ocean. Wylie and I were given the primo accomodations -- better than anyone in the group. We have our own bedroom and bathroom. Aunt Sue would love it here; they have that great policy regarding flushing the toilet -- "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down." YUM! You've probably read on others' postings that the trip yesterday was long. We didn't get here until 9:00 p.m. It is true that after crossing the border you are in a different world.

I'm already trying to figure out ways to remember all the important lessons being here has taught us; I think Wylie is also feeling awestruck.

We miss home and everyone terribly, esp at night. Hi to Sissy. I miss you, honey, but I'm sure glad you're there to take care of Dad.

I'm off to lunch (spaghetti) and then we get to go to the beach! Out to dinner tonight (scary! -- they have Chinese food here -- hmmmmm) Do you think the chicken here is free range??

My love to all, esp my Tom, who I have to survive the week without when I'm used to him taking good care of me.

Now I can say I've driven a considerable distance in Mexico, at night, and it was an interesting experience. The drivers here have a code all their own, and Steve says there are over 100 accident shrines between here and Ensenada.

This morning dawned foggy and humid. We'll be going out to the build site this morning to do some prep work for the foundation pour tomorrow, then this afternoon we're going to the beach for a while before church this evening. Dress for the morning is long work jeans; it's going to be a warm day.

Good morning on the Lord's day

We had a short orientation last night with the program directors, Steve and Jackie Scott. They discussed the culture and some of the things we should expect to see. It brought a scripture to mind. Even though it's easy to get focused on the upcoming work, there is other 'work' to be done as well.

"But in your hearts set apart Christ the Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, " Peter 3:15 (this was the part I liked). Basically, we need to be prepared to witness.

I am sitting in the dining room as I write this. Jackie, Steve and our own Heidi are at work in the kitchen. I can hear breakfast being prepared. Gerhard mentioned a rooster waking him up this morning, but I refuse to believe him unless he can produce a picture, which he hasn't been able to yet.

People are slowly filtering in for water and coffee as they wake up. We are getting ready for breakfast, and then on to the job site to prep for the cement floor being poured in this morning. (Eric)

On the road

After arriving at the airport, we were met by Jennifer Steinke and friend. We grabbed our intrepid white vans and immediately hit an In-and-Out Burger. We whizzed by the border without even a glance from the border guards ... I mean they didn't even look in our direction.

It was approximately 170 miles of driving after we crossed the border. Because of the traffic it took almost 6 hours which also included a couple of potty stops and a trip by Costco. Yes, Costco and Starbucks ARE everywhere. The Costco looked just like the one in Edmonds, even down to the food court, hot dogs, pizza and chicken wraps.

Mike and Kelly were the main drivers for this leg, and here is a great shot out the window of the lead van as we approach Ensenada.

We were greeted right after this shot by a giant likeness of Jesus. We sure felt welcome!

We were traveling along the coast for a good portion of the trip, as you can see here.

As we turned inland, the road became a lot more curvy...

We arrived at our destination around 9pm. Jeri, Mike and I are sitting in the cafeteria as we edit this last blog post for the night. Tomorrow we are off to the job site to lay the prep work for the house foundation, then to the beach and last to church in the evening. (Eric)

The flight was smooth

We had a great flight. It was on time, we all made it to the airport smoothly, and Heidi didn't completely cut off the circulation to my hand during takeoff. Pobo the wonder dog (Logan's toy) also helped with calming effects for Heidi. We had a great view of Ranier a few minutes into the flight. (Eric)

We had the big caravan of vans take us down to the airport. I am typing this up as we sit in the airport terminal waiting for boarding in about 10 minutes. Final count of 21 for the trip. I will add names and pics over the next couple of days.

Just a few more days before we leave

It's Wednesday morning, and it's just a few more days before we meet at the airport Saturday morning. Everyone is doing their last minute packing, and the excitement of the trip is beginning to mount. There are just over 20 of us going on this trip and we have a lot of different tasks while we are down there.

Probably the most prominent work effort will be building a cinder block home for a single mother and her family.
Heidi and Patsy will be providing some dental services and also instructing about how to care for your teeth. Supplies will be handed out as well.
We have some children's craft projects set up for some of the structured and possibly unstructured situations where we are working with kids.
We will be going to one of the migrant work camps to do some relief work and provide food / care packages.
Certainly not last, but to evangelize and witness our walk of faith and our savior.

We will be flying into San Diego on Saturday morning, picking up two large vans and then heading south along Baha California to Colonia Vicente Guerrero;
